Carbon 1144 is a medium carbon, resulphurized steel with free-machining qualities. It contains higher carbon than 1141 or 1045 resulting in better heat treatability. Its high sulfur content results in good machinability while its Carbon and Manganese content cause good mechanical properties on cold drawing. With heavy draft cold drawing followed by stress relieving, even higher mechanical properties can be achieved with ASTM A311B, LaSalle’s Stressproof® and Fatigue-Proof®. Carbon 1144 is perfect for applications requiring considerable machining at higher strength levels.
